Your new cedar fence will require periodic maintenance.

Cedar, as in all wood, is a porous material and it will dry out in our Colorado climate. This is known as “Dry Rot.”

Dry Rot can be prevented by taking the following precautions:

  • Wait at least 2 weeks for your fence to completely dry. - Although your fence may look dry and feel dry, pickets are commonly milled from green trees and are wet on the inside. Applying a sealant too soon will cause your fence to warp and twist. This is due to the fact that you may be sealing moisture inside the boards and when the sun shines on your fence the moisture has no where to go. Result, warped boards. You will know when your fence is dry due to the fact that you will see your pickets shrink 1/8” to 1/4” spaces between your pickets
  • We suggest that you use Wood Defender stain products.
  • Wood Defender stain is available through Aspen Country Fence if you choose to do it yourself
  • The best application for stain is with a staining pad.
  • The quickest and easiest way to apply stain to your fence is with a pump up stain sprayer. Make sure that you use a stain sprayer and not a garden or pesticide sprayer due to the fact that a stain sprayer sprays in a fan rather than in a circle like a garden sprayer does. Also the nozzle is larger on a stain sprayer allowing stain to pass through easier. Using this method, you should be able to stain one side of a 100 foot fence in about 20 minutes.
  • This needs to be done at least every other year depending on the amount of sun exposure your fence gets. This process will add years of life to your fence as well as keeping it looking new!
  • We now have the capability to professionally stain your fence and we would be happy to give you a quote for this service
